Please Help Support Scouting in Penarth District

Scouting in 2010, both locally and nationally, is clearly still very popular, so we always require additional adult help and support to allow us to provide better programmes and activities for our youngsters!

In Penarth, we currently have waiting lists for youngsters wishing to become Beavers and Cubs in our Scout Groups. We therefore invite all active adults who are willing and able to help us provide an exciting, productive and enjoyable Scouting experience for our youngsters to come along and join in all the fun!

Our many adult volunteers help provide needed back-up to our dedicated leader teams in many different ways, as part of a parent rota, with fundraising, or helping to manage Scouting by working on Group and District Executive committees. Those wishing to work actively with our youngsters may do so, either as non-uniformed Sectional Assistants, or as full leaders in the Beaver, Cub, Scout or Explorer Scout Sections.

We need enthusiastic adult volunteers for the following roles:

Uniformed Leaders to work with Beaver Scouts (6-8 years), Cub Scouts (8-10 years), Scouts (10-14 years), or Explorer Scouts (14 to 18 years). Sectional Assistants, (non-uniformed helpers) are also required in all sections. People willing to help manage Scouting, as Group Officers, committee members or fundraisers, are also always required.

We invite applications for any of these voluntary positions, all of which are, of course, fully unpaid! Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. A full programme of training and support is provided for all adult volunteers.

A full CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) Disclosure clearance, together with references, will be required for all posts.

Getting Started Training

When an adult joins the Scout Movement in any role, they are given a Provisional Appointment and are required to complete what is called "Getting Started" training. A CRB clearance is also required for all Adult roles.

There are basically two modules to complete for "Getting Started" and these must be completed within five months from the date that the Provisional Appointment Certificate is issued. Only in exceptional circumstances can this be extended for a further five months. NO further extension is allowed.

Module 1 training usually takes place on the same evening as the interview with the Appointments Advisory Committee, leaving five months for the completion of module 3 or 4 (depending on the role applied for.)

All modules need to be validated and once this has been done, the Appointments Secretary is informed in writing by the Assessor. Once this is received, the Appointments Advisory Committee will review the applicant and if all the necessary clearances have been received satisfactorily, a full appointment will be approved and Headquarters informed accordingly.

Module 1 is required by all Group Officers and Executive members.

All other roles require the completion of Module 1 and either Module 3 or 4, depending on the role.

(Assistant Leaders and Leaders are required to complete Wood Badge Training with three years of their appoinment.)
